Founded by Myrtis Currie, LUBBA is a 501c3 organization existing under and by virtue of the laws of the State of Illinois. The 501c3 certificate from the Internal Revenue Service, Department of the Treasury. Per letter Lubaa’s Mission and Purpose as a non-profit charitable organization is to provide for the homeless women who are mentally challenged, a safe, supervised, sheltered home; with access to counseling and instruction for a socially productive life. At each level, the organization provides outreach activities and community awareness initiatives.

Lubaa’s History

In December 2003 a group of eight women (most of the women had previously worked at a shelter for homeless women) along with Ms. Currie came together and organized, Lubaa. From March 2004 to November 2005 we operated a four bedroom house on the south side of Chicago. We closed the house because we could no longer afford the rent and other expenses. From the time we opened the house until the time it was closed we serviced 20 mentally challenged homeless women. We had around the clock monitoring of the residents. Our staff consisted of the board members, when they were not working their regular jobs. We received donations from churches, community residents as well as community organizations. We are not funded yet but we are still submitting proposals and grants.

The Lubaa women will have access to social activities, game night, spiritual awareness, community events, rap sessions, family interactions, and other activities that the women themselves may want to see happen.

We know that the bases for life are food, shelter and clothing but we as human beings need, nurturing, love and support. Because we feel that some where along the way they missed out on these fundamental entities, we feel that most humans whether mental challenged or not are looking for survival outlets that only another human can give.

Lubaa can house eight to ten women in a home style setting. Lubaa foresees offering our services one house at a time in one community at a time. We can only do that with the support of other caring people and people who know that God is not pleased when we turn our backs on the poor or the less fortunate.

Please help us to make this vision a reality. You can pledge what ever amount you can afford on a monthly bases, or you may want to give a one time donation. Whatever you decide to do will be appreciated beyond measure.

Success Stories

Client A entered LUBAA’s program with very limited reading, writing or communication skills. This client would not talk with other client or take her medication. Client A said very little to staff to let them know what her needs were. Client A’s appearance was in need of much improvement. LUBAA’s staff evaluated her needs as: Personal Hygiene, Communication Skills and Medication regimen. After a few months Client A had built a trust with staff and could verbalize her needs and her wants to staff and any one that would listen. Client A’s self esteem had greatly improved as well as her appearance, hygiene and communication skills. Client A takes her medication with little or no reminders. Client A is now volunteering with one of our community partners. Client A has since moved on but she does keep in touch with the LUBAA Organization, and we continue to give our support to Client A when needed.
